Overview
Ehime University encourages all international students enrolled at the university to study Japanese and provides comprehensive Japanese language education. There are courses for international undergraduate students in the General Education Program.
Non-undergraduate students who wish to take these courses should read the syllabus carefully and inquire at the respective department office.
In addition, there are classes offered by the Institute for International Relations (IIR), although students cannot earn credits for these classes. We also offer classes to acquire knowledge to start life in Japan smoothly, classes on Japanese culture, and classes to acquire Japanese language skills that will be useful in finding employment.
If there is room in the program, we also offer a certificate program, “Japanese Language Study Program,” which can be taken by individuals other than international students enrolled at Ehime University. Please click here for details of the certificate program “Japanese Language Study Program”.

Standard Japanese Language Course
| Target group | International students enrolled at Ehime University, excluding students in the Intensive Japanese Language Course. Depending on enrollment, visiting researchers, international faculty members, and spouses of persons affiliated with Ehime University may also enroll. |
| Points to Keep in Mind | Students may take classes at two different levels at the same time, but they must be consecutive levels. Those who have not completed one lower level in the previous semester must take a placement test. * Please click here for the list of Japanese language courses, the schedule, and the application form for the second semester of AY2026. |
Survival Course
| Target group | New international students, etc. (Visiting researchers, international faculty members, and spouses may also enroll if space is available.) |
| Points to Keep in Mind | This is Ehime University’s own 2-week intensive course, offered at the beginning of each semester. The “Language Skills” course aims to help students learn to listen to and speak the minimum amount of Japanese necessary for daily life. Life Skills provides the minimum necessary information for living in Matsuyama. Students with high Japanese language proficiency may take “Life Skills” only. * Please click here for the list of Japanese language courses, the schedule, and the application form for the second semester of AY2026. |
Intensive Japanese Language Course
| Target group | MEXT Scholarship students (Research Students and Teacher Training Students) who require preparatory Japanese language education, and others approved by the Director of the IIR(Institute for International Relations). Participation in both Survival Course components beforehand is strongly recommended. |
| Points to Keep in Mind | After the Survival Course, students will continue to learn basic Japanese. The main goal is to be able to speak Japanese in daily conversation, and students will also study hiragana, katakana, and kanji (about 300 characters). Introduction to Japanese Culture and Society will be conducted in English. Since all classes are a series, students are required to attend all classes. * Please click here for the list of Japanese language courses, the schedule, and the application form for the second semester of AY2026. |
